THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA LIBRARIES
A Newsletter for Faculty
Volume 1, Issue 1 Fall 2000
Welcome back! We hope you are past the first fall rush and are getting into your academic routine. At the library we, too, are settling in, however things are anything but ordinary. We have a lot going on and are trying hard to not slip into a routine about how we serve you. This newsletter is a prime example of that. Rather than hold a meeting for library representatives this year, we are taking advantage of the convenience of electronic mail to keep you abreast of library developments. We hope you like the change in format, and we welcome your comments on it. So let's get right to it.
Reserves are available for faculty members needing to offer materials to students in support of their coursework. For your convenience, the form for placing materials on reserve is now available online at http://libraries.ou.edu/reserves/resdoor.asp The form is turned in with materials to be placed on reserve. We offer both traditional print and electronic reserves. For more information contact Ken Pearson at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 325-3843.
Interlibrary Loan allows you to request copies of materials not owned by the University Libraries from other libraries. You may make your interlibrary loan request electronically at http://libraries.ou.edu/interlib/bizguide.htm or you may make interlibrary loan requests directly in most FirstSearch databases <http://libraries.ou.edu/iis/exec/d3.idc?keyword=F>http://libraries.ou.edu/iis/exec/d3.idc?keyword=F In many instances, we are now delivering articles electronically for your added convenience. See http://libraries.ou.edu/depts/access/prospero/patron.htm for more information about Electronic Document Delivery.
Interlibrary Loan also provides the Sooner Express service. This is an on-campus document delivery service for OU faculty, staff and graduate students. Information about this service is available at <http://libraries.ou.edu/depts/access/ill/sner1.html>http://libraries.ou.edu/depts/access/ill/sner1.html
The University Libraries is also a member of OK-Share. OK-Share is a system-wide reciprocal borrowing program among 38 institutions of higher education in the state. Information on OK-Share is available at <http://libraries.ou.edu/okshare/okshare.htm>http://libraries.ou.edu/okshare/okshare.htm Library privileges may also be available at libraries outside the state of Oklahoma; for more information, please contact Doni Fox at <mailto:email@example.com>firstname.lastname@example.org or call 325-3843.
New to the catalog this fall is the ability to check your account status and renew materials checked out to you all without leaving your home or office. Simply log in to the catalog using your 4x4 and password at http://libraries.ou.edu/catalog.htm When you enter the catalog, select the User Services button from the left hand column and you will be provided with additional menus to review your account or renew your books.
Library instruction is available for classes of all sizes and levels. Contact the appropriate subject librarian (for a listing of librarians in Bizzell, go to http://libraries.ou.edu/depts/ref/people.htm ; for a listing of branch librarians, go to http://libraries.ou.edu/depts/ref/LIBRARY.htm), or Bibliographic Instruction Librarian Beverly Joyce at email@example.com
PURCHASING LIBRARY MATERIALS
The University Libraries utilizes both approval plans and direct ordering to acquire materials for the Libraries collections. Approval plans bring library materials at a discount directly to the University Libraries through an approval profile (for a more detailed explanation, go to http://libraries.ou.edu/depts/acq/aplans.htm).
For information on our approval profiles, see
http://libraries.ou.edu/depts/acq/sshmr.html (social sciences and humanities)
For a listing of publishers represented by the plans, see <http://libraries.ou.edu/depts/acq/sshpubl299.htm>http://libraries.ou.edu/depts/acq/sshpubl299.htm (social sciences and humanities)
We also purchase materials directly for those publishers not represented by our approval plans. If you or other members of your department wish to recommend purchases, please contact your library liaison. A complete listing of departments and their liaisons is available at <http://libraries.ou.edu/depts/acq/liason.htm>http://libraries.ou.edu/depts/acq/liason.htm This year, all orders must be submitted by March 3, 2001.
In August, the University Libraries implemented the University OneCard system, Sooner Sense, for library photocopiers and microforms. Prices for these services changed at that time, as well. Complete details are available at http://libraries.ou.edu/announcements/OneCard.htm
Another new service is the extension of hours for the Western History Collections. The Collections are now open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m., and on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. (open until kickoff on home football game days). Hours may vary during the summer, intersession and holidays; please call 325-3642 for current information.
The University Libraries is pleased to announce the acquisition of two new databases. ERIC E*Subscribe provides access to the fulltext of most ERIC education documents from 1993 to the present. Project Muse provides access to electronic journals in the fields of literature and criticism, history, the visual and performing arts, cultural studies, education, political science, gender studies, and many others. Both are accessible from the University Libraries Databases page <http://libraries.ou.edu/databases.htm>http://libraries.ou.edu/databases.htm
We have also added fulltext access to about 400 additional journals in our Electronic Collections Online database available via FirstSearch. These electronic journals are fully linked to the FirstSearch subject databases so users are sent directly to the text of articles they find in databases such as Sociological Abstracts, PsycInfo, BIOSIS, ERIC and others.
